Sydney Entrepreneur Sarah Patel Builds Online Radio Platform to Connect Local Listeners
Patel launched Sydney Soundwaves from a Redfern studio and now serves thousands of daily users seeking community-focused music streams.
How we reported this

Sarah Patel opened the first studio for Sydney Soundwaves at 189 Chalmers Street in Redfern in March 2024.
The service now streams 18 hours of live programming each day and has drawn 52,000 monthly active listeners as of June 2026. Traditional broadcasters lost ground during the same period while online stations recorded steady growth in user numbers across New South Wales.
The timing matters because Sydney households continue to cut costs after repeated Telstra network failures this month. Many residents have shifted to lower-priced internet radio apps that do not rely on mobile data. Patel's model charges only $4.99 a month for ad-free access and already undercuts several national subscription services.
Local partnerships drive growth
Soundwaves records live sessions at the Lansdowne Hotel on Broadway and at the monthly markets held at Carriageworks in Eveleigh. These venues supply both performance space and direct access to Sydney's inner-west music community. Patel also runs a weekly segment featuring artists who sell work through stalls at the Glebe Markets on Saturdays.
Staff numbers at the Redfern site reached eight full-time producers and engineers last quarter. The company leases additional editing suites at 42 Cope Street to handle the increased volume of user-submitted tracks.
Numbers behind the expansion
Listener data released by the company shows a 41 percent rise in streams originating from postcodes 2010 through 2016 between January and June 2026. Average session length sits at 47 minutes, according to internal analytics shared with advertisers. Patel financed the latest equipment upgrade with a $180,000 grant from the City of Sydney's Creative Business program, awarded in December 2025.
The platform will add two new live shows focused on western Sydney artists next month. Existing subscribers can test the updated schedule through a free seven-day trial available on the company website.
