Sydneysiders have shifted weekday morning runs to lesser-known tracks inside Centennial Parklands and the North Head Sanctuary at Manly, avoiding the packed coastal promenade that draws most visitors.

July 2026 brings cooler 16-degree mornings that suit longer outdoor sessions without the summer heat, and residents cite the need for mental reset after months of hybrid work as the main driver behind the change.

Named routes inside established parks

Locals start at the Randwick gates of Centennial Parklands and follow the native-plant loop past the Lachlan Swamps before cutting onto the unpaved track that skirts the Moore Park side, a route rarely shown on tourist maps. Further north, the same runners catch the ferry to Manly then walk the sealed road to the North Head Sanctuary, where the old military roads turn into single-track bush paths that stay empty until late morning.

City of Sydney park-use figures released in May 2026 show a 28 percent rise in off-path entries at Centennial Parklands compared with the same period last year, while North Head records 12,000 monthly visits from locals versus 45,000 from day-trippers.

How to access the routes this week

Entry remains free at both sites, though the Centennial Parklands Trust charges $8 for all-day parking near the Randwick entrance. Walkers can download the free Centennial Parklands app for the latest track conditions and join the Surry Hills meditation groups that meet at 7am Tuesdays near the Paddington gate for guided sessions that finish with a 4-kilometre loop.

Check the Bureau of Meteorology forecast before heading out and carry water, as no cafes operate inside the North Head Sanctuary grounds.
