Best Family Activities in Sydney: Zoo, Aquarium and Outdoor Adventures

Sydney offers an exceptional range of family-friendly activities across its harbour, wildlife parks, beaches and cultural institutions that make it one of Australia's most rewarding cities for families with children of all ages. Taronga Zoo on the Mosman foreshore is Australia's most-visited zoo and the most scenically situated, with its hillside position above Middle Harbour providing backdrop views of the Harbour Bridge and CBD skyline from the animal enclosures. The zoo is accessible by ferry from Circular Quay, making the journey there part of the experience. SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium at Darling Harbour has one of the world's largest displays of Australian marine life including the Great Barrier Reef exhibit, dugongs and the shark walk-through tunnel. The Australian Museum on College Street, adjacent to Hyde Park, is Australia's oldest museum and has outstanding natural history and First Nations collections that are engaging for older children. Featherdale Wildlife Park in Doonside (45 min west) is one of Australia's best private wildlife parks for koala and wombat encounters. Luna Park on the Milsons Point foreshore is a heritage amusement park with Harbour Bridge views that has operated since 1935. The Powerhouse Museum at Ultimo has interactive science and technology exhibits particularly popular with school-age children.
