Weekend Getaways from Sydney: Blue Mountains, Hunter Valley and South Coast
Sydney is one of Australia's best-positioned cities for weekend escapes, with three outstanding regional destinations within 2-3 hours of the CBD offering completely different landscapes and experiences. The Blue Mountains, reached in 90 minutes via the M4 motorway or the Blue Mountains train line from Central, is the most popular destination, with the Three Sisters at Katoomba, the Scenic World cableway and some of Australia's most dramatic sandstone escarpment walking tracks drawing hundreds of thousands of Sydney visitors annually. The Hunter Valley, 2 hours north via the M1 Pacific Motorway and Hunter Expressway, is NSW's most established wine region with over 150 cellar doors concentrated around Cessnock and Pokolbin, including internationally recognised producers such as Tyrrell's Wines and Brokenwood. The NSW South Coast, accessed via the Princes Highway, includes Jervis Bay (3 hours), Mollymook and Ulladulla (3.5 hours) and Merimbula (5 hours), offering increasingly pristine coastal experiences the further south you drive. The Snowy Mountains in winter (4-5 hours via the Hume Highway) add a skiing destination to Sydney's seasonal options.
